Welsh Wedding video captured at 18 frames per second on Super 8mm Cine Camera (18/5/12)
This is my wedding present for my good friends Harvey and Gemma.
Harv’s a childhood friend (Im talking before I could even speak) from Penzance, Cornwall so it was great to see him tie the knot to such a lovely girl.
I decided to shoot the film on one roll of Kodak Tri X black and white super 8 Motion Picture Film.
I aimed to shoot the film in the style of the amazing super 8 film festival, Straight 8. One roll of super 8 film and no post production, just in camera editing.
I opted to use my canon 310xl super 8. I love this little camera. As I was a guest it was perfect. It’s so small it can squeeze in a jacket pocket. More importantly it packs a punch with an f~1 lens making it amazing for the awful lighting conditions at most weddings. The 310xl only shoots 18 Frames per second or single frame and is pretty much automatic apart from focusing.
Despite the muggy wet Welsh weather it was a lovely day of celtic celebration sinking wine and one of Cornwalls finest, Doom Bar (nice touch getting them to stock the Doom Harv)
By the time we left I was so drunk I am surprised I even had a camera with me! Luckily I did.
Working with film there is always a nervous wait while the film is getting processed. Due to my alcohol intake I had already decided my straight 8 idea had gone out the window, now I was just hoping I had something usable on film. To my delight the film was exposed, although far from perfect. The bigger surprise was that in my drunken stupor I got pretty close to the in camera editing I had aimed for. In post production I kept every single foot of film just moved a couple of shots around for continuity purposes.
The soundtrack was recorded by my very talented brother Darren. A live recording with a couple of layers added over the top.
Darren teaches guitar in Camborne and Truro in Cornwall if anyone looking for a guitar tutor in Kernow check out his site (www.cornwallguitarlessons.co.uk).
Luckily Harvey and Gemma were over the moon with their wedding video. All the best for the future guys, much love
